I Fell in Love With This Character
Updated: Jan 10
This is a post about Kayla, the main protagonist from Eighth Grade (2018), one of my all-time favorite films.

I am a HUGE fan of the coming-of-age genre, and no entry in it has come to mean more to me than Bo Burnham's sensational directorial debut. This is because A) it is really accurate as to what it's like to be an awkward, shy eighth grader, and B) as a former introverted eighth grader myself, I strongly related to Kayla in a lot of ways. The way she held herself, felt about herself, etc. So much of it rang so true to me when I was that age. When I first saw it in theaters back in 2018, I immediately knew it was the best film I'd seen the best film of the year, and one of my favorite movies ever. Also, Elsie Fisher TOTALLY should've been nominated for a Best Actress Oscar, because she gave one of the greatest god-dang performances I still have ever seen.
